Backup Questions

There is no set limit to the number or size of files you can back up with Magic Backup!  Your paid subscription includes all the space you need to backup all of your important stuff.  It would be impractical to backup more than 100GB of data due to limits of Internet speed, but we don't set a fixed limit, so we call it unlimited!  For most users, the default set of backed up files is in the 10 GB range.

When you first install Magic Backup, it may take from several hours to several days to make the initial copies of your files.  This time will depend on the number and size of the files you need backed up, and on the speed of your Internet connection.  Remember that Magic Backup operates silently in the background to perform all of its work, and won't interfere with the normal use of your computer.

Once this "initial backup" of your files is complete, Magic Backup will monitor all of your files and backup only the changes and new files that you create.  New and changed files will start being backed up 10 minutes after they stop changing.  Once a file is backed up, that same file won't be backed up again for 24 hours.  This ensures that you always have the most recent versions of your files backed up.

You can also force Magic Backup to make a backup of a particular file as soon as possible by using the right-click menu in Windows Explorer.

Backup a file ASAP using Explorer context menu.

By default, Magic Backup will backup all of the contents of your Desktop, My Documents folder, My Pictures folder, My Music folder, My Videos folder, and important Application Data from installed applications.  For most users, these default settings will work just fine.

It's easy to select additional folders for backup if you need to.  Magic Backup adds a "context menu" pick to Windows Explorer and your Desktop that allows you to right-click on an item and select or remove it from backup.

Control what is backed up using the Explorer context menu

When you first install Magic Backup, it may take several days to complete the initial backup of all of your files.  After that initial backup is complete, it makes every attempt to backup any new or changed files within 24 hours.  New files will start the backup process about 10 minutes after you're done editing them.  Any given file will be backed up only once in any 24 hour period, unless you tell Magic Backup to back it up as soon as possible.

No, external USB drives, floppy drives, and CDROM drives are not supported.  Magic Backup scans only internal fixed hard drives by default.  Advanced users may want to include folders from external devices for backup, and can do so with a paid subscription, by using the Magic Backup right-click menu in Windows Explorer.

The current release of Magic Backup supports Microsoft Windows XP and Windows Vista operating systems.  We are working to add support for MAC OSX, and developing an Enterprise version called Magic Backup Pro to support servers.

The following minimum system specifications are recommended:

  • Windows XP or Vista OS

  • 500 MHz Pentium 4 Processor or higher
