General Questions

Magic Backup is a service that uses your your high-speed Internet connection and your Windows® PC to make backup copies of all your important files to a remote location that we provide.  We install a small program on your computer that locates and makes secure copies of your pictures, movies, music, documents and other important data silently and automatically.  Magic Backup keeps track of new files and changes to existing files so it always knows what needs to be backed up.  It performs what we call "Automatic Continuous Backup" in the background without interfering with the normal use of your computer.

In the event of a computer failure, theft, fire, or other accidental loss of files, you can easily recover your irreplaceable files at the drop of a hat.  You can also download your backed up files from any computer with an Internet connection and Web Browser, giving you unprecedented access to your photos, presentations, etc.

Magic Backup can safely backup and restore ANY file type.  Here are a few of the extension types that we can backup.  When you download our service to your PC, it comes with a standard set of files that we recommend to be backed up.  It is your choice to use standard set, or modify our standard set your heart’s content.  Any file you can create, we can backup.

Just a fancy name?  Perhaps, but it does describe why Magic Backup is so easy to use, and so reliable.  Unlike other backup products that perform "scheduled" backups during the middle of the night, Magic Backup is always on the lookout for new or changed files that need to be backed up.  The minute you're done editing a document, (well, 10 minutes after actually), Magic Backup will silently prepare and transfer a secure copy of that file to your private location on our servers.  You never have to worry about complicated configuration settings, marking files for backup, changing backup tapes, burning backup CDs, or any of that old-school backup mumbo-jumbo.

For most users, Magic Backup will work great right "out of the box".  If you happen to be a more tech-savvy user, Magic Backup does provide some advanced settings so you can tweak it just the way you like.

The current release of Magic Backup supports Microsoft Windows XP® and Windows Vista® operating systems.  We are working to add support for MAC OSX, and developing an Enterprise version called Magic Backup Pro to support servers.

The following minimum system specifications are recommended:

  • Windows XP or Vista OS
  • High-speed Internet connection (DSL, Cable or equivalent)
  • 500 MHz Pentium 4 Processor or higher
  • 256 MB RAM or higher
  • 10 MB disk space for application installation
  • 2 GB free hard disk space for temporary working space

As many as you like, provided that you have a paid subscription for each computer.  And to make it easy, you can manage all of your computers and subscriptions with your single account on MagicBackup.com.

By default, Magic Backup will backup all of the contents of your Desktop, My Documents folder, My Pictures folder, My Music folder, My Videos folder, and important Application Data from installed applications.  For most users, these default settings will work just fine.

It's easy to select additional folders for backup if you need to.  Magic Backup adds a "context menu" pick to Windows Explorer and your Desktop that allows you to right-click on an item and select or remove it from backup.

Control what is backed up using the Explorer context menu

When you first install Magic Backup, it may take from several hours to several days to make the initial copies of your files.  This time will depend on the number and size of the files you need backed up, and on the speed of your Internet connection.  Remember that Magic Backup operates silently in the background to perform all of its work, and won't interfere with the normal use of your computer.

Once this "initial backup" of your files is complete, Magic Backup will monitor all of your files and backup only the changes and new files that you create.  New and changed files will start being backed up 10 minutes after they stop changing.  Once a file is backed up, that same file won't be backed up again for 24 hours.  This ensures that you always have the most recent versions of your files backed up.

You can also force Magic Backup to make a backup of a particular file as soon as possible by using the right-click menu in Windows Explorer.

Can you afford not to have backup copies of your family pictures?  Your home movies?  Your financial information?  According to a recent study by Carnegie Mellon University, computer hard drive failures are far more common that you might think.  As many as 1 in 10 computer hard drives fail before their expected lifecycle.  As you become increasingly dependent on your digital lifestyle, you need to be smart about keeping off-site backups of your stuff, and Magic Backup is the easiest, most reliable way to do it !
